Bed Mobility Exercise

Aging, illness, injury, weakness, or disability can all affect our ability to move. This is especially true when it comes to getting in and out of bed. As one of our most important daily actions, it's vital that we don't let this ability diminish to keep our independence and movement. Bed Mobility Exercise focuses on this, including activities such as scooting in bed, rolling (turning from lying on one's back to side-lying), side-lying to sitting and sitting to lying down. It also includes scooting to sitting on the edge of the bed when preparing to stand or transfer.

Our therapists at fisio work with you on gentle exercises to help you maintain mobility during bed rest and when changing from lying down to other positions. They understand that the correct body mechanics and muscle strength help decrease the risk of injury and other factors like a decline in mental health. This can include anxiety, depression and fear caused by being in just one position for an extended period of time.

Techniques used in this treatment include sit and reach exercises. The aim is to see significant muscle groups tighten and relax, which in turn can boost circulation. Other activities can help improve balance, including shoulder mobility, arm circles, stretching the arm across the body to the opposite side, reaching overhead and reaching forward (or to the side), pelvic tilts, leg raises, shoulder rolls, and tightening the abdomen. Depending on the client, this can be done with or without resistance. People of all ages can benefit from this treatment.

The Session

An assessment will help your therapist understand your abilities and difficulties in performing functional tasks. This will include in-bed mobility and planning out strategies and exercises to improve your current condition based on your strength, comfort, and ease of transferring. This will be done in our private studio. Techniques will be practiced to avoid strain or injury, helping activate key areas. We use different kinds of exercise in the session, including strengthening, stretching, endurance and range of motion.
